The King of Pride Rock; a wise, righteous, brave and powerful leader.
Mufasa, the King of Pride Rock; a wise, determined, honest and powerful leader. Mufasa demonstrates exceptional knowledge and a deep understanding of his duties and responsibilities as King; holding great influence over his kingdom. Mufasa has the confidence and intelligence to teach and guide his son; Simba, making him the exemplary “good leader”. Mufasa acts with integrity; he is a loyal leader to his family, friends and pride lands, he respects the circle of life and in turn the animals of Pride Rock respect him.
Mufasa has true determination and teaching abilities in order to guide his son Simba; the future King. The Trait Approach specifically focuses upon personal attributes of leaders, viewing leadership solely from the perspective of the leader. This approach suggests that these leadership traits are enduring characteristics which we are born with (Fleenor, 2006). According to this approach, intelligence, determination, honesty, integrity and drive are common traits which effective leaders’ possess (Levi, 2011). It is clear that Mufasa clearly demonstrates the attributes of an effective leader.

Mufasa demonstrates Transformational Leadership; helping followers to develop and grow into leaders by responding to needs and go beyond expected performance (Bass & Riggio, 2008). Mufasa was a valuable mentor and strong role model, he taught Simba how to be a leader through inspiration, encouragement and discipline; he invested time and patience in order for his son to gain an understanding and learn the traits of a leader and create a vision of becoming King.
According to Northouse (2001) Transformational leaders hold specific qualities; high values, empowerment, integrity, inspiration, cooperation and contribution to initiate change. It is evident that Mufasa displayed a true reflection of Transformational leadership qualities. It becomes evident that Mufasa's personal time which he invested in his son successfully empowered Simba to take his role as King. This form of leadership is also referred to as Incarnational Leadership; Mufasa's character promotes and values support, courage and embraces others. Mufasa's presence allowed Simba to feel comfortable and only strengthened their relationship thus allowing Simba to strive to follow, respect and idolise his father.
Throughout the film Mufasa displays the qualities of a motivational leader, encouraging Simba to be brave, strong and courageous. Not only does Mufasa dedicate his time, knowledge and skills into his son, his true motivational qualities become evident when he advises Simba to return to the Pride Lands to take his place in “The Circle of Life”.
Mufasa motivates and encourages Simba which in turn reminds Simba of his true identity and self. Mufasa effectively inspires and empowers Simba to realise his potential and responsibilities of his position as King.
