The Lion King is a film about leadership and power. Each character in the film displays unique traits, qualities and skills necessary for effective leadership.
Mufasa is a true, Transformational leader displaying the essential values, skills and characteristics for successful leadership, which in turn creates respect and loyalty among his followers'; thus promoting the 'Circle of Life'.
Simba is taught the essential leadership skills as a young lion cub, however his inexperience results in ascension to his leadership position and when faced with his looming responsibilities, he becomes the reluctant leader.
Scar, the positional leader rises to his status of leadership and associated power, demanding respect from his followers'. As a Transactional leader Scar has a personal vision,interested in maintaining power and achieving goals which benefit himself.
The supporting characters play a role in influencing and encouraging each leadership style displayed by the main characters.
At a glance, the Lion King is an animated, musical Disney film targeted for a young audience, however when analysing the film, key themes of power, responsibility and leadership emerge. The opening song 'Circle of Life' sets the agenda for the film, highlighting that integrity is irreplaceable; everything is interrelated and exists in a delicate balance. Each animal of the Pride Lands holds responsibility to somebody else and ultimately are all connected in the great Circle of Life.
